M3U8 Is Just Text: How to Read Playlist Files
Learn to read and understand M3U8 playlist files. No special tools needed — just a text editor and this guide.
M3U8 Files Are Plain Text
Despite sounding technical, M3U8 files are just plain text. You can open them with any text editor. Here's what you'll see when you open one:
#EXTM3U
#EXT-X-VERSION:3
#EXT-X-TARGETDURATION:10
#EXT-X-MEDIA-SEQUENCE:0
#EXTINF:10.000,
segment-0.ts
#EXTINF:10.000,
segment-1.ts
#EXTINF:10.000,
segment-2.ts
#EXT-X-ENDLIST
Reading the Key Information
When you look at an M3U8 file, focus on these details:
- Is there an ENDLIST tag? — Yes = VOD, No = Live stream
- How many segments? — Count the EXTINF lines
- What's the segment duration? — The number after each EXTINF tag
- Are there multiple STREAM-INF lines? — Yes = adaptive bitrate available
- What resolutions are offered? — Check the RESOLUTION parameter
Troubleshooting by Reading the File
Reading the M3U8 file can help diagnose streaming issues:
- If segment URLs are relative, the player must be on the same path as the playlist
- If TARGETDURATION is very high, the player will buffer longer
- If MEDIA-SEQUENCE jumps, segments may have expired (common in live streams)
- If you see #EXT-X-KEY, the stream is encrypted
